Evolution of Thought

I've recently been introduced to the musical mashups of Zack Darling.  He takes classic rock songs from Pink Floyd to the Beatles to Bob Marley and re-mixes them in a way that is familiar, but unique. By doing so all of these musicians, who were all legends in their own time and still heroes to many, coalesce into a new combination of sounds that is greater than the sum of their parts.

This is what I find fascinating about the field of public policy. Ideas from one field cross into the next. Philosophy, economics, political science and many others all come together in order to make the world into a better place. The name "multidisciplinary" is a misnomer. It doesn't grasp at the magnificence of it all. The building blocks of knowledge merge in uncommon connections and unique combinations to make something new altogether. The evolution of knowledge is perpetual; it is in the name of the game. Marching towards a better world. A better future.

"By the time we are ready to settle even the nearest of planetary systems, we will have changed. The simple passage of so many generations will have changed us. Necessity will have changed us. We’re an adaptable species. It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri and the other nearby stars. It will be a species very much like us. But with more of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses. More confident, far-seeing, capable and prudent. For all of our failings, despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness." - Carl Sagan
